FUME HOOD EXHAUST OUTAGE : CLSL-A - JAN 6 THRU JAN 10, 2020

TO ALL IN CLSL-A:

As a key step in the ESCO project, and in an effort to keep the CLSL-A fume hood exhaust fan system functional for years to come, it is imperative that F & S completes extensive preventative maintenance on the fan belts, sheaves, and pillow block bearings to prevent future systems failures.  F&S has scheduled this preventative maintenance for Jan 6-10, 2020.  During this time the use of the fume hoods and auxiliary exhaust ports (i.e. elephant trunk system on glove boxes) will NOT be allowed to guarantee worker safety.
Note:  The general laboratory supply/exhaust will remain functional during the fume hood outage. Thus offices and labs can remain occupied as long as fume hoods and glove boxes are not in use.
Please follow the guidelines below for your safety and the worker’s safety -  F&S workers will be inside the exhaust fans during the fume hood outage:
1.      All hazardous operations in the fume hood should be secured and chemicals capped.
2.      All hazardous chemicals properly contained and spills wiped up.
3.      All hood sashes lowered.
4.      All operations utilizing the elephant trunk system (e.g. glove boxes) secured.

During the outages, the fume hood alarms will go off and there won’t be a way to silence them.  A more detailed guide will be sent out closer to the date. Building sections affected will be as follows:
1st Floor:  A101, A105, A106, A123, A125, A151
2nd Floor:  A201, A203, A205, A207, A214, A217, A223, A225, A227, A229, A231

Proper Procedure for Non-Emergency Work Order Requests

4DCC8DF2

PROPER PROCEDURE FOR NON-EMERGENCY WORK ORDER REQUESTS

When you notice something maintenance wise that needs repair in your labs, offices, hallways, bathrooms, etc. that is NON-EMERGENCYALWAYS put the request in Reaction via this link:  https://reaction.scs.illinois.edu/physicalPlant/.   Please be as detailed as possible in your description of the maintenance issue.

Examples of NON-EMERGENCY work orders include, but are not limited to, the following and DO NOT require a CFOP:
-Broken hood sashes(glass, tracks, rollers, etc.)
-Leaky faucets & sinks(slow drips not causing safety or flooding issues)
-Heating/Cooling Issues(if not affecting temperature sensitive research experiments/equipment)
-Lights or electrical outlets not working properly
-Most carpentry requests(drawers off track, fixing cabinets, tile replacement, etc.)

Examples of NON-EMERGENCY work orders that DO require a CFOP include, but are not limited to, the following:
-Stripping/waxing floors or cleaning carpets
-Removal of refrigerators & freezers
-Any repairs related to personal lab equipment(water baths, chillers, etc)

While the F & S crafts/trades people try to get to your request as quickly as possible, please know they have a 2-week window to complete non-emergency repairs.  However, they may be backed up on work orders submitted before yours or need to order parts for your maintenance repair that may stretch the repair beyond the 2-week timeframe.  If nobody from F & S has responded to your request after the 2 week timeframe, please let me know so I can follow up and get them there.

Please try to refrain from calling/emailing someone on the SCS Facilities and Safety Team(Danielle, Ron, Karla, Shane, Chad) with non-emergency requests as it may be delayed due to someone being out of the office, in meetings, or otherwise unavailable to check emails or voicemails in a timely manner.  One of us is ALWAYS checking Reaction and will get to your request as quickly as possible.  This also ensures your request does not get “lost in the shuffle” of emails if you put it in Reaction.

I encourage all lab groups to put this email in a binder or hung up somewhere so it can be referred to as needed.  This information will also be on the SCS Building Outages/Important Notices blog:  www.scsbuildingoutages.blogspot.com.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.

Removal of Ceilings - Ground Floor- RAL - U of I Campus Heat Recovery Project - Beginning June 3

TO ALL IN SCS:

Davis-Houk Mechanical, Inc. will be removing ceiling tiles on the ground floor of RAL beginning Monday, June 3.  This work will take place in the main corridor near the triple bank of elevators and is being done as part of the Campus(NOT SCS) Heat Recovery Project.   There will be a walkway passage while the work is being done so the area will not be completely blocked off.  Attached you will find a map of the location where they will be performing the ceiling tile removal.  Looking ahead, here is a tentative schedule of the work being done and when it will be completed:

·         5/31 or 6/3 – remove ceilings/lights etc.
·         6/3 – 6/7 – get any RFI’s or issues submitted for review/coordinate with AEI
·         6/10 – 6/14 – turn in/fabricate piping for hallway and hopefully resolve any of the issues found the week before.
·         6/17 – 6/21 – install new piping
·         6/24 – 6/28 – pressure test and insulate
·         7/1 – 7/3 – reinstall ceilings/lights

This information will be posted on the SCS Building Outages/Important Notices blog:  www.scsbuildingoutages.blogspot.com.  If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know so we can relay them to Davis-Houk and campus.

CONSTRUCTION WORK - RAL - CAMPUS HEAT RECOVERY PROJECT

To All:

Davis-Houk Mechanical will be breaking apart a large concrete base that the old compressor sat on in the basement mechanical space of RAL South this week.  During this work, you may notice some noise while they break it apart.   Once they get it broken up, they will pour a housekeeping pad for the new chiller.  The new chiller will hopefully be delivered and placed on approximately May 28.  Once that is completed, they will begin replacing the patio and sidewalks from June 3-June 12.   Attached you will find the points of egress during this construction.  Below is information to know while this construction is occurring:

-          Drilling vibrations should be minimal (comparable to the soil boring analysis earlier this year)
-          Construction noise will be loud (90+ decibel) and will be heard inside the building surrounding the courtyard.
-          The courtyard will have a drilling rig, bobcat, backhoe, etc. during construction
-          The street and sidewalk will be closed at times (contractor to coordinate)
-          Contractor will confirm start times, but end time will be difficult to confirm. The contractor cannot leave an open excavation and concrete placement needs to be completed as it allows (no stopping mid pour)

PLEASE NOTE:   This is part of the CAMPUS Heat Recovery Project and NOT an SCS related project.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know.
